Seth Meyers: Trump Is ‘Rearranging Deck Chairs on the Titanic After It Already Sunk’ (Video)

“Our only hope is that he gets carried away and accidentally replaces himself.” Meyers joked in Thursday’s “A Closer Look”

Seth Meyers on Thursday spent a new “A Closer Look” examining Donald Trump’s various situations, from the Russia situation to the Stormy Daniels situation to the situations involving shenanigans in his cabinet.

Meyers began by lampooning Trump’s claim that nobody has been tougher on Russia than he has, listing off a half-dozen ways that actually he’s been the opposite of tough. And then he transitioned from that to reports that Trump has mused about replacing his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, with EPA chief Scott Pruitt, which would be such a comically fraught move in ways that maybe we haven’t even considered yet.

“Now Trump has been upset for months that his attorney general Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation. He wants someone who could exert influence over the probe and potentially shut it down. Which is why it was alarming today when CNN reported that Trump floated replacing Sessions with Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, as recently as this week,” Meyers said before delivering his best zinger of the segment.

“Trump just keeps moving staffers around. It’s like he’s rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic after it already sunk. He moved John Kelly to chief of staff, Ronny Jackson to Veteran Affairs, now he wants to move Pruitt to attorney general. Our only hope is that he gets carried away and accidentally replaces himself. ‘I move Kelly to chief of staff. Pruitt to attorney general. I made a move, I’m very excited about it, I moved Pence to president. Oh, no! Oh, no, what’s left for me? Janitor?!’”

Meyers then moved to the current reason Trump is upset about the whole Russia thing — his former campaign manager Paul Manafort once again being in the crosshairs of the Russia investigation.

“I got to say, I’m not surprised they’re investigating Paul Manafort for possibly colluding with the Russians. I mean, look at him. He has resting crime face. He looks like a guy who gives you instructions in ‘Grand Theft Auto,’” Meyers joked, before discussing the reports that special counsel Robert Mueller told Trump’s lawyers that Trump is not at this time a criminal target of his investigation.

“So the president’s former campaign chairman, already under indictment, is also under investigation for possibly colluding with Russia. But what about Trump himself? On Tuesday night, the Washington Post reported that Mueller told Trump’s attorneys the president remains under investigation but is not currently a criminal target,” Meyers said.

“Now, that’s not really a meaningful distinction. You can easily go from being the subject of an investigation to being the target of that investigation. And for their part, Trump’s allies seem concerned that this might actually be a ploy by Mueller to try to lure Trump into agreeing into an interview and getting him to say something that would make him a criminal target.”

Meyers then played a montage of Fox News hosts expressing that exact concern — that Mueller is trying to trick Trump into incriminating himself.

“Maybe it is a trap, but in fairness, it’s not too hard to trap Donald Trump. He seems like a guy who would put out mousetraps and then 30 seconds later go, ‘Oh, wow, free cheese! ahh!’” Meyers joked, as he pantomimed Trump getting his hand caught in his own mousetrap.
