Sony Picks Up Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest Doc ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life’

Actor's directorial debut about legendary rap group screened at Sundance

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American rights to "Beats, Rhymes & Life," Michael Rapaport's documentary on A Tribe Called Quest, the legendary rap group.

The film, Rapaport's directorial debut, screened at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

"As a first time filmmaker to have the support of SPC is like being signed by the New York Yankees," Rapaport said in a release.  "Telling this story was not only a labor of love, but also the most fulfilling accomplishment of my career."

Financial terms were not disclosed. Sony brokered the deal with the Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group and Steven C. Beer at Greenberg Traurig.

The band — featuring Q-Tip — recorded three platinum albums in the 1990s: "Midnight Marauders," "The Low End Theory" and "Beats, Rhymes & Life." The group broke up in 1998, but reunited 10 years later to headline the "Rock the Bells" concert series alongside Snoop Dogg and the Wu-Tang Clan.
