Sony Pictures Gets a Jump on Sundance

Though the Sundance Film Festival doesn’t begin until next week, a number of big acquisitions are already under negotiation, says The Hollywood Reporter. Sony Pictures Classics snatched up Wednesday "Rudo y Cursi," a Spanish-language film reuniting "Y Tu Mama Tambien" stars Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, and directed by Carlos Cuaron. The sale could be promising for a market some expect to be slow, although it also may reflect fears that there will be few bidding wars pushing prices up this year. Film sellers typically try not to show their films ahead of the festival, and numerous films have made the rounds in advance this year. Buyers are aware that there was little box office bump from the hot films at Sundance last year. Two big sales – "Hamlet 2," which went to Focus Features, and "Choke," to Fox Searchlight – performed poorly in general release.
