Spike Lee is getting mocked for his outfit at Sunday night’s BET Awards, drawing comparisons to Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter for his tribute to late musician Prince.

The “Chi-Raq” director wore a purple suit and top hat, prompting many on social media to blast him for his outfit choice.

“I know Spike Lee is dressed to honor Prince, but that hat makes him look like Johnny Depp in every movie he’s ever been in,” Guardian reporter Dave Schilling wrote.

Spike Lee really outchea looking like The Mad Hatter. God bless,” #OscarsSoWhite creator April Reign posted.

Other attendees who honored Prince at the BET Awards on Sunday were Janelle Monae, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson and Erykah Badu.

However, one user rushed to Lee’s defense, writing, “Wow at all these people rippin on Spike Lee for a memorial gesture for a legend.  Get your f–king weight up, world.”

Earlier this month, Lee hosted a Purple People Party on the streets of Brooklyn to honor Prince, who died on Apr. 21 at the age of 57.

The party kicked off with a live marching band. Lee served as band leader, carrying a golden guitar in the shape of Prince’s symbol.
