‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Claims Guinness World Record

The seventh film in the saga created by George Lucas hits theaters on Dec. 18

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is already breaking records, months ahead of its release.

Guinness World Records has confirmed that the second trailer for the highly anticipated film now holds the record for the most viewed movie trailer on YouTube in 24 hours.

The preview for the J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars” sequel amassed 30.65 million views in one day after being released in April.

“The release of the clip created unprecedented levels of excitement among ‘Star Wars’ fans around the world,” the record keeping organization said in a statement. “With the trailer featuring the return of the charismatic villain-hero Han Solo, once again played by Harrison Ford, alongside his furry co-pilot Chewbacca.”

At the time of this publishing, the trailer has generated over 54.2 million views. According to Guinness, the franchise also holds the record for the most successful film merchandising.

“As of 2012, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at $30.5 billion, including box-office receipts as well as profits from their video games and DVD sales, with the much-hyped upcoming movie set to add further to the incredible financial success of the series,” Guinness wrote.

Disney is releasing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in theaters on December 18.
