‘The Arbalest,’ ‘Tower’ Win SXSW Jury Awards

Acting honors go to Andre Royo for ”Hunter Gatherer“ and Lily Rabe for ”Miss Stevens“

“The Arbalest,” director Adam Pinney’s ’60s and ’70s-set comedy about a toymaker, has been named the best competition feature of the 2016 South By Southwest feature film jury.

The film won in a field of 10 world-premiere films selected from more than 1,400 submissions. The jury, which included TheWrap’s film critic Alonso Duralde, gave Andre Royo and Lily Rabe special acting awards for “Hunter Gatherer” and “Miss Stevens,” respectively.

In the documentary competition, the top prize went to Keith Maitland’s “TOWER,” an animated film about America’s first mass shooting. It also won the Louis Black “Lone Star” award. Other docs that won awards were “Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America” and “The Seer,” which was singled out for Lee Daniel’s cinematography.

SXSW audience awards will be announced later in the week.
