A lot of CNN viewers had to turn to their kids Sunday night and ask what “The Purge” is: The Universal Pictures horror franchise spiced up the Democratic debate with a fake campaign ad promoting “The Purge: Election Year.”
The mock campaign ad features the Statue of Liberty, mountains, kids in a park and all of the other generic shots that often represent America in political commercials.
A voiceover says, “This July have your voice be heard,” before a montage of Americans claim, “I purged.”
“I purged because staying in is un-American,” a voter says before the voiceover returns.
“Don’t let your freedoms get taken away. Show your support for the purge. ‘The Purge: Election Year,’” the voiceover says, while a bald eagle soars through the sky.
