“The Walking Dead” star Andrew Lincoln told TheWrap that fans better be ready for some heartache when the AMC series returns this Sunday.

“This is a hard season,” Lincoln said. “You’ll see in the back eight, this episode on…it really moves incredibly quickly and intensely to one of the most heartbreaking and extraordinary season finales we’ve ever attempted.”

The last time we saw Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, he was trying to lead a group of survivors through the streets of Alexandria after a horde of zombies invaded. It’s not hard to imagine in such a situation that at least one character could die, but which one?

Lincoln also revealed his process for decompressing after filming a season of the incredibly emotional and violent zombie apocalypse drama.

“I just collapse,” he said. “I have to do a little bit of press and sort of wrap things up, but as soon as I get off the plane at Heathrow I have to be sort of wheeled into a car and then my bed and I fall asleep for two weeks, choking and sweating. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

He also insisted that bad interactions with “Walking Dead” fans are rare. Instead, fans usually just want one thing when they approach him.

“People are just very sweet and want a selfie,” he said. “And then generally when younger girls come up to me and ask ‘Can I get a picture with you?’ I feel very flattered and then they say, ‘It’s for my mom.’ And then sometimes people say, ‘I preferred you with your beard’ or ‘You’re a lot shorter than I expected.’”

“The Walking Dead” returns Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m./8c.
