The Weinstein Company has acquired a transgender drama starring Elle Fanning, “Three Generations,” at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, directed by Gaby Dellal, stars Fanning as a young woman transitioning to male. Naomi Watts plays her mother, and Susan Sarandon plays her grandmother, who is a lesbian.
Weinstein paid about $6 million for distribution rights for the United States and the United Kingdom, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal.
Transgender is having its moment in content themes and pop culture, with former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner recently announcing that he was transitioning to female and critical acclaim surrounding the Amazon series “Transparent.”
CAA, ICM and IM Global all brokered the deal.
