The Weinstein Co. has acquired the distribution rights to an upcoming film adaptation of “Macbeth” that will star Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation.

Justin Kurzel (“The Snowtown Murders”) will direct the adaptation of Shakespeare’s famed play, which both Orson Welles and Roman Polanski have tackled previously.

For those readers who failed high school English, “Macbeth” centers on a Scottish general and his power hungry wife who resort to murder and general villainy in their quest to capture the throne. Spoiler: wearing the crown does not end well for this particular couple.

Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso wrote the script while Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of Australia-based See-Saw Films are producing.

Fox Searchlight was also reportedly in the hunt for rights to the film.

Fassbender is considered a strong contender for an Oscar nomination for his performance in “12 Years a Slave” and can also be seen this month in “The Counselor.” Cotillard will next appear in James Gray‘s drama “The Immigrant.”
