Selena Gomez, Instagram’s most followed person, is “ghosting” the platform because she felt it was consuming her too much — so now, only her assistant has the password to the account.
“As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out,” Gomez told Vogue, talking about her 110 million followers.
“It had become so consuming to me. It’s what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like s— when I look at Instagram. Which is why I’m kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.”
In fact, the app is now deleted off her phone, and she doesn’t even have the password to it. Sometimes, she says, she wishes she could disappear from social media completely, although that’s not entirely possible given her celebrity status.
Even when she flew to Italy with her new boyfriend, The Weeknd, the paparazzi took notice. When asked about her relationship, she said that she will never talk about her relationships again because it’s always come back to bite her.
“Look, I love what I do, and I’m aware of how lucky I am, but–how can I say this without sounding weird? I just really can’t wait for people to forget about me,” she said.
In November, the “Same Old Love” singer returned to social media after a three-month hiatus from her career in August in order to take care of health issues, after sharing that she had been diagnosed with lupus in 2015.
According to Vanity Fair, Ariana Grande is the second most-followed person on Instagram, a post previously held by Taylor Swift. Gomez’s Coca-Cola ad was the most-liked photo before Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement dethroned it.
