"Wrath of the Titans" slashed its way to an impressive $1 million in midnight showings Thursday, according to studio estimates.
The sequel to "Clash of the Titans" put up that godly number in 1,490 locations while facing fierce competition from "The Hunger Games."
It will now expand to 3,545 locations.
Despite facing off against an opponent more fearsome than the Kraken — "The Hunger Games" is, after all, on track to be one of the biggest movies of all time — "Wrath of the Titans" is widely expected to gross about $40 million domestically over the weekend.

The original "Titans" opened to $61.2 million domestically in April 2010, a figure that, barring a little help from Zeus, "Wrath of the Titans" will fail to match.
"Wrath of the Titans" stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades.
The Warner Bros. and Legendary production cost $150 million to produce.
Warner Bros. is planning an ambitious international rollout, which should lead to a big weekend for the action film. The studio will open the film in 60 territories and on about 13,900 screens. The only major market that won't see Perseus go toe to toe against mythological foes is Japan.
