YOU On Demand Signs Pact with NBCUniversal for Chinese Pay-Per-View

YOU On Demand is backed by Shane McMahon, son of World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon

YOU On Demand has signed a licensing agreement with NBCUniversal that will allow it to distribute the studio's films over its pay-per-view platform in China.

Backed by Shane McMahon, son of World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, YOU On Demand went public last June. It has already signed deals with many of the leading studios, a group that includes Warner Bros., Disney and Paramount.

However, the company and its founder's ambitions are huge. They hope to become the dominant pay-per-view platform in China, but doing so could be a challenge in a country that has an aversion to paying for content and a flexible appreciation for copyright protections. After launching last winter, YOU On Demand projects to be in 11 million Chinese homes by the end of the year.

Among the films that will be available as part of the deal with NBCUniversal are older titles like “Despicable Me" and “It’s Complicated,” along with such recent releases as “The Five Year Engagement" and “Snow White and the Huntsman.”
