CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” has had a lot of major guest stars over the years, but they’ve usually shouted the castings from the rooftops. Not so the celebrity who had a surprise role on the show’s first Thursday episode of the season.

Fresh from his Emmy-nominated performance on FX’s “Fargo,” Billy Bob Thornton joined the show as a urologist who develops an unrequited crush on Penny. Based on his performance, we likened him to a Sheldon Cooper if he developed crushes on pretty girls.

Awkward and unable to properly read social cues, Thornton first shows up at Penny’s house with flowers to try and woo her. Sheldon commiserates with the poor doctor after Leonard explains that Penny is engaged … to him.

The guys sympathize with the good doctor’s situation and even befriend him, heading back to his place to check out his basement filled with geek memorabilia.

Things escalate from there, with Amy getting thrown into the middle of the doctor’s quest for love. Clearly, this guy is immediately drawn to any woman who shows him kindness. And he’s willing to lock a bunch of nerds in his basement to get his shot with them.

Watch Thornton’s strange journey for love on “The Big Bang Theory” in the videos below.

“The Big Bang Theory” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
