William Shatner Will Miss Leonard Nimoy’s Funeral

“I am currently in FL … I can’t make it back in time,” says “Star Trek” co-star

William Shatner will not be in attendance at “Star Trek” co-star Leonard Nimoy‘s funeral on Sunday, the actor shared Saturday morning.

“I am currently in FL as I agreed to appear at the Red Cross Ball tonight,” Shatner said on Twitter. “Leonard’s funeral is tomorrow. I can’t make it back in time.”

Shatner played Captain Kirk to Nimoy’s Spock on the “Star Trek” TV series and in multiple films and the two have remained close friends throughout the years.

Nimoy was hospitalized last week after firefighters responded to a medical call at his home. Nimoy was reportedly suffering severe chest pains, and was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center. Last year, Nimoy said on Twitter that he was diagnosed with COPD, which he attributed to a smoking habit he had kicked 30 years earlier.

“I loved him like a brother,” Shatner said in a statement following Nimoy’s death at the age of 83 on Friday. “We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.”

On his absence from the planned private memorial service Sunday, Shatner said he feels awful.

“I feel really awful,” he tweeted. “Here I am doing charity work and one of my dearest friends is being buried.”

But he plans to celebrate his friend’s life from afar, he continued.

“So let’s spend some time tomorrow celebrating Leonard’s life and remembering the man,” Shatner said. “Until tomorrow! #LLAP”
