Gerard Smith, bass player from TV on the Radio, died Wednesday morning following a battle with lung cancer. He was 34.
The band announced Smith’s death on its Web site, saying, “We will miss him terribly.”
The group, which has been touring behind its most recent album “Nine Types of Light,” also noted that it will cancel five of its upcoming shows, including Wednesday night’s performance at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit; a Chicago performance; two concerts in Minneapolis; and a Denver concert on April 26. Smith has not been performing with the group on its latest tour, as he had taken a hiatus in order to battle the disease.
The group announced that Smith had been diagnosed with lung cancer in March. At the time, it noted, “Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard's legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem.”
