"Gossip Girl" star -- and recent marijuana bustee -- Chace Crawford has joined the cast of Bruce Beresford's multi-generational indie drama "Peace, Love and Misunderstanding," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Catherine Keener stars as a conservative New York lawyer who takes her son and intellectual daughter to visit their estranged hippie grandmother (Jane Fonda) in Woodstock after her husband asks for a divorce. The retreat quickly becomes a reminder of why she escaped her mother's wacky lifestyle in the first place.

Crawford will play a war-protesting butcher who catches the eye of Keener's politically active daughter. Hard to believe that anyone who looks like Crawford would ever grow up to be a butcher, but I'm inclined to give Beresford's casting director the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Newcomers Christina Mengert and Joseph Muszynki wrote the screenplay.

BCDF Pictures' Claude Dal Farra and Brice Dal Farra will produce with Lauren Munsch and Jonathan Burkhart. Production is set to take place in New York's Hudson Valley in July.

Beresford is best known for directing "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Tender Mercies." Samuel Goldwyn Films is set to release his next film, "Mao's Last Dancer," in August.

Crawford next stars in Joel Schumacher's gritty indie drama "Twelve," which comes out next month. He previously appeared on the big screen in "The Covenant" and "The Haunting of Molly Hartley." And the 24-year-old recently dropped out of Paramount's "Footloose" remake, probably a wise decision.

Crawford is represented by CAA.
