“Doctor Strange,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “La La Land,” “Rogue One” and “Sully” have been nominated for sound mixing by the Cinema Audio Society, which announced its 2016 nominations on Tuesday morning.
The songs are among the frontrunners for nomination in the Oscars sound-mixing category, along with “Arrival,” “The Jungle Book” and “Deepwater Horizon.” In recent years, more than two-thirds of CAS nominees have gone on to receive Oscar nominations.
In the animated-film category, the CAS nominees are “Finding Dory,” “Kubo and the Two Strings,” “Moana,” “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Zootopia.” The first-ever documentary nominations went to “13th,” “Gleason,” “O.J.: Made in America” and two music docs, “Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words” and “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.”
TV nominees in the movie-or-miniseries category are “11.22.63,” “Black Mirror,” “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,” “The Night Manager” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson.” In the series categories, the nominees are “Game of Thrones,” “Better Call Saul,” “Mr. Robot,” “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” “black-ish,” “Modern Family,” “Silicon Valley,” “Transparent” and “Veep.”
Voting will take place from January 25 through February 12. The 53rd Annual CAS Awards will take place on February 18 in Los Angeles. At that show, the CAS Filmmaker Award will be presented to director Jon Favreau, and the CAS Career Achievement Award will go to John Pritchett.
