Saturday’s Kentucky Derby took a viewership hit compared to last year’s race, shedding nearly a million viewers.

The race, which aired on NBC and averaged 15.3 million viewers, was down from 2013’s 16.2 million. But the television event was up marginally over the 14.8 million that the 2012 race — the last time that the Kentucky Derby faced head-to-head competition from the NBA Playoffs — drew.

In national household ratings, this year’s Kentucky Derby had a 9.4 rating/22 share, making it the highest-rated Saturday offering since the Sochi Olympics on Feb. 15, which also aired on NBC.
