If you’re one of those people who looks at all the sexual harassment, assault and other assorted misconduct scandals that keep popping up out there in world and is somehow surprised by it all, the ladies of “SNL,” including host Saoirse Ronan, have a message for you.
An early sketch this week saw Ronan, Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant form a girl group to sing about how, actually, this isn’t a new thing and men have been awful to women for the entirety of human history. The group intro’d their song with the members of the group taking turns delivering pieces of the following monologue:
“Hey there, boys, we know the last couple months have been friggin’ insane. All these big, cool, powerful guys are turning out to be — what’s the word? Habitual predators? Cat’s out of the bag. women get harassed all the time. It’s like, dang, is this the world now? But here’s a little secret that every girl knows. oh, this been the damn world.”
Surprise! The title of the song is, aptly, “Welcome to Hell.” And the chorus goes like so: “Now we’re all in here/ Look around/ Isn’t it nice/ It’s a full nightmare.”
After a lengthy list of ways women have to watch out for sketchy guys, Leslie Jones come on stage with an addendum: “Hey, just wanted to say, I think what you guys are doing is really cool. I get it. But you do know that it’s like a million times worse for a woman of color, right?”
After all the other women agreed profusely, Jones enthusiastically joined the group.
