The highlights (and lowlights) of last month’s cable ratings results

Cable ratings results for the month of August are in. Here are all the highlights and lowlights of the dog days of summer:

-CNN had its worst month in primetime in total viewers since May 2000. The news network has been dealing with declining ratings for a while now, but it has a crop of new talent coming in for the fall– Piers Morgan, Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker. CNN's fresh faces have the unenviable task of with turning around the network's sagging ratings.

-Oxygen had its best August viewership ever. The network saw increases in all key demos and is on pace to have its best year ever in 2010.

-History had its best summer on record this year, capped off with its best ever August. The network is up 30 percent in the key adults 18-49 demographic compared to last year .

-August was Nickelodeon's most-watched month ever in total viewers. Nickelodeon averaged 2.5 million total viewers for the month.

-Discovery experienced its best August ever among men, women and total viewers in the 18-34 and 18-49 demographics. Compared to 2009, the network was up 7 percent in adults 18-49.
