Seth Meyers Tackles Uber Executive’s Controversial Remarks on ‘Late Night’ (Video)

Emil Michael purportedly said during a dinner Monday night that the company should target critical journalists’ personal lives and families

Meyers had a lot of issues with what went down at Uber this week, and he broke them down in his “Couple Things” segment on NBC’s “Late Night” Wednesday night.

Uber executive Emil Michael found himself in hot water when he allegedly outlined an idea to invest a million dollars to hire researchers and journalists that would look into the personal lives and families of journalists who have been critical of the company during a dinner last week. While there were journalists in attendance, Michael has indicated he thought he was speaking off the record.

After BuzzFeed posted an article about his comments, both Michael and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick apologized for his comments, with Michael saying, “The remarks attributed to me at a private dinner — borne out of frustration during an informal debate over what I feel is sensationalistic media coverage of the company I am proud to work for — do not reflect my actual views and have no relation to the company’s views or approach.”

The part where he claimed that what he said in private does not reflect his actual views rubbed Meyers the wrong way.

“That is not how it works. The comments you make in private are absolutely your private views. That’s why you make them in private,” Meyers said. “It’s comments you make in public when everyone is listening and recording what you’re saying that don’t reflect your actual views. That’s true for all of us. The truth is always worse than what we say in public. In fact, if you publicly said you wanted to spend a million dollars digging up dirt on journalists, I would have said, holy crap, Uber is murdering journalists.”

He also called Michael out for making his comments with journalists around, equating it to Lord Voldemort strolling into Hogwarts and telling everyone “off the record” that he was going to burn the place to the ground.

Check out Meyers rant about Uber, which he still loves as a service, in the video above.

“Late Night with Seth Meyers” airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on NBC.
