3D Network Launching Next Week on DirecTV

Joint venture of Sony, Imax and Discovery promises nature and travel heavy programming

3net, the joint venture television network from Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation announced that DirecTV will be the first distributor to carry its new 3D network.

DirecTV will launch on February 13, 2011; instantly presenting viewers with two 24/7 3D options. ESPN is also upping its part-time channel ESPN 3D into a full-time network the day after 3net's launch.

Getting enough eyeballs may prove problematic. DirecTV is available in 17 million households, but less than than 700,000 3D sets had shipped in the United States thus far.

3net also unveiled its premiere night primetime slate, which will feature nature and travel heavy programming.

Here's 3net Premiere Night Schedule:

CHINA REVEALED (8:00 PM)
This hour-long series explores China's thronging cities, epic vistas and spiritual heartlands of this huge and mysterious nation.

INTO THE DEEP 3D (9:00 PM)
This IMAX special takes audiences on a  three-dimensional exploration of the undersea world.

FORGOTTEN PLANET (10:00 PM)
Explore the strangest places on earth – once vibrant cities now completely devoid of all humanity. This series of one-hour programs imagines the world humans will one day leave behind by exploring what we’ve already abandoned.
