J.J. Abrams Surprises Fans With Secret ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel (Video)

Paramount releases trailer for “10 Cloverfield Lane,” described as a “blood relative” to the 2008 sleeper hit

Despite his out-of-this-world success with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” J.J. Abrams still has a few surprises under his belt.

The director delighted moviegoers at the first screenings of Michael Bay‘s “13 Hours” on Thursday night with a trailer for a new Bad Robot/Abrams-produced movie titled “10 Cloverfield Lane.”

If that sounds familiar, that’s because the thriller is described by Paramount as a “blood relative” to the 2008 found-footage monster horror film “Cloverfield.”

While the existence of the film itself wasn’t a complete secret — having gone through the titles “The Cellar” and “Valencia” with stars Mary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Goodman and John Gallagher, Jr. attached to it — all other details were a welcome shock to fans, especially the news that it will be released in two months.

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of ‘Cloverfield,’” Abrams said in a statement to media via Paramount. “The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

The 1:35-minute-long trailer sent social media into a frenzy when it popped on YouTube late Thursday night and quickly became a top trend on Twitter and Facebook.

Read the synopsis below and watch the trailer.

“After a car accident, a young woman awakens in an underground cellar, where most of the action takes place. She fears she has been abducted by a survivalist, who tells her he saved her life and that a chemical attack has left the outside world uninhabitable. Uncertain what to believe, she decides she must escape, whatever dangers she may face outside.”

“10 Cloverfield Lane” is set to be released on March 11, 2016.
