Box Office: George Clooney’s ‘The American’ Opens to $1.7M

Hitman thriller expected to take in $13-$14 million over the Labor Day holiday weekend

Focus Features “The American” opened to a so-so $1.7 million on Wednesday.

Heading into Labor Day, the drama starring George Clooney as a moody hitman, looks poised to take in about $13 to $14 million over the six-day holiday weekend.

The $20 million thriller has a distinctly art-house feel, but was release wide on 2,721 Theaters. Seen as an awards contender, the assassin in winter movie has sharply divided critics, who either fall into the slow and boring or intelligent and beautiful camps. It currently has a 59 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
