CBS to Air Tony Awards Through 2013

New three year pact keeps the Broadway awards show on the eye network, where its been since 1978

The Tony Awards are coming back to CBS.

The eye network announced on Monday that it has signed a deal to broadcast Broadway’s biggest night through a new three-year agreement that extends through 2013. The awards show has been a CBS staple since 1978.

Though hardly a ratings smash, the awards show did receive two 2010 Emmy nominations for outstanding special class programs and outstanding writing for a variety, music or comedy special.

Bucking a trend in awards shows which have showed modest ratings improvements, numbers for last year’s show hosted by Sean Hayes slipped 8 percent. The Tony's drew 7 million viewers and a  1.2 rating among the key 18-49 demo.

"For more than three decades, The Tony Awards has been an annual CBS showcase and a big part of our ongoing commitment to support the performing arts on television," said Jack Sussman, CBS' executive vice president, specials, music and live events, said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing this great partnership and bringing the best of Broadway to our viewers for many years to come."
