The initial bloom of love being acted out each night in”First Date” just got handed an expiration date.
The relationship musical will end its Broadway run on January 5, 2014, having played 34 previews and 174 regular performances.
The show received mixed reviews, with some praising the buoyant score and performance by “Chuck” star Zachary Levi, while others decried a sitcom-like plot. New York Times critic Charles Isherwood offered a rather brutal assessment when he wrote, “A more appropriate title for ‘First Date’ would be ‘Last Rites.’”

The show was a modest box-office performer, grossing $281, 538 last week, according to Broadway World. That was one of the weakest showings for a musical.
“First Date” centers on a nebbish man who gets set up with a serial dater. It opened officially in August with a book by Austin Winsberg and music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner.
