Four journalists — including the Atlantic and USA Today freelance reporter Clare Morgana Gillis — captured and detained in Libya early last month were released by the Libyan government on Wednesday.
Gillis, James Foley, an American reporter for the GlobalPost, Spanish photographer Manuel Brabo and British freelance reporter Nigel Chandler were also released, the Atlantic said.
The journalists were released to a hotel in Tripoli and are expected to be allowed to leave the country tomorrow. Gillis told the Associated Press that the Libyan government had charged them with illegally entering the country, but that that their sentence had been suspended, and that the four were doing fine.
The group had been held for two weeks in a coed military detention center in Tripoli — Gillis later to a women's civilian prison — and, eventually, another facility,
The status of another journalist — freelance photographer Anton Lazarus Hammerl — remains unknown. Hammerl was also detained on April 5.
