Why Lucious Lyon, Chance the Rapper and Adam Klein Are TV’s Social Media MVPs of the Week

The week’s most emotionally reacted-to TV personalities and characters

An “Empire” stalwart, a charismatic rapper and the Sole Survivor had viewers talking passionately on social media over the past week.

The Wrap has partnered with Canvs, a language analytics company that measures emotions around content, for a weekly look at the characters and personalities that have TV viewers the most worked up. The data below covers Dec. 14-20 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to broadcast and cable television shows.

Of the 21,453 Emotional Reactions (ERs) surrounding last Wednesday’s episode of “Empire” on Fox, 15 percent were prompted by the character Lucious Lyon (portrayed by Terrence Howard). Lucious is the famed anti-hero of the series; fans who love to hate him love using social media to pick apart his latest questionable actions.

Of the 20,720 ERs surrounding the Dec. 17 episode of “Saturday Night Live” on NBC, 35 percent mentioned guest star Chance the Rapper. Viewers were grooving to his performance, commenting about how they respect him and how his music makes them feel good.

Of the 18,429 ERs surrounding CBS’ episode of “Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X” on Dec. 14, 17 percent mentioned contestant Adam Klein, who was crowned the Sole Survivor. In what ended up being an emotional episode, Adam revealed that his mom, a big fan of the show, was dying of lung cancer and his participation was to honor her. (Sadly, she passed away shortly after the filming of the final tribal council.)
