Ratings: ‘Modern Family’ Top Rated, But World Series Wins Night for Fox (Update)

Despite a slight dip from last year, Game 1 of the Fall Classic pushes Fox to an overall victory

"Modern Family" was the highest-rated show Wednesday night, but the World Series made Fox the highest-rated network of the night overall, according to Nielsen data.

"Modern Family" at 9 drew a 5.6 rating/14 share in the cherished adults 18-49 demographic, versus the World Series' 4.2. However, due to the consistent strength of the game, which ran from 8 to 11 p.m., Fox scored an overall victory for the night, averaging a 4.2, compared to 3.3 for ABC and CBS, which tied for second place.

In terms of household ratings, Wednesday's game was down 2 percent compared to last year's Game 1, which might be explained by the fact that San Francisco, one of last year's home markets, is more than twice as big as St. Louis. (Dallas, the other home team this year, was also represented in last year's series.) Game 1 amassed a 8.7 rating/14 share in households, with 14.2 million viewers.

ABC began its night at 8 with "The Middle," which ran flat versus last week with a 2.9 rating/9 share in the adults 18-49 demographic and 9 million total viewers. "Suburgatory" at 8:30 was also static, taking a 3.1/8 in the demo and 8.7 million total viewers. Though down 5 percent from last week, "Modern Family" at 9 still took the night's top ratings with a 5.6/14 in the demo and 12 million total viewers. "Happy Endings" at 9:30 received a 3.0/7 and 6.8 million total viewers, while "Revenge" closed the night at 10 with a 2.5/7 and 7.9 million total viewers. Overall, the network drew an average 3.3/9 in the demo and 8.9 million total viewers.

At CBS, "Survivor" kicked off the night at 8 with a 3.3/9 in the demo and 11.1 million total viewers, while "Criminal Minds" the following hour received a 3.3/10 in the demo and 13.1 million total viewers. "CSI" finished off the night for the network at 10, taking a 2.6/7 to tie its season low, and 10.6 million total viewers. Those numbers gave the network an overall average for the night of 3.3/9, with 11.6 million total viewers.

NBC's "Up All Night" at 8 was flat with last week, drawing a 2.1/6 in the demo and 5.6 million total viewers. It was followed by a repeat of "Whitney" at 8:30. "Harry's Law" at 9 received a 1.2/3 in the demo and 8.1 million total viewers, while "Law & Order" at 10 received a 2.1/5 in the demo and 7.5 million total viewers.
