‘Flintstones’ to Get Seth MacFarlane Reboot on Fox

Updated version of classic Hanna-Barbera animated series will premiere in 2013

Fox included a surprise at its upfront Monday: plans for an updated version of "The Flintstones" from executive producer Seth MacFarlane, premiering in 2013.

Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly announced the new animated series after unveiling Fox’s 2011-12 slate.

He joked that most show news appears online as soon as he thinks of it, but in this case Fox had been able to keep it a secret until the day of the upfront.

There were no details on the show, which will join a Fox animation lineup that includes new toons “Napoleon Dynomite” and "Allen Gregory" from Jonah Hill, as well enduring classics like “The Simpsons.”

The original "Flintstones" ran for six seasons and 166 episodes on ABC from 1960-66. It was adapted into a live-action movie in 1994. That movie, featuring Elizabeth Taylor in one of her last roles, earned more than $300 million at the box office, but a sequel was not nearly as successful.
