The Dish Network Corp. has named Michael Kelly as the new president of its subsidiary Blockbuster, the company announced on Monday. Kelly, who had previously served as executive vice president of Dish Network's Commercial Services division and its direct sales and media sales organizations, came aboard at Dish Network when it purchased his company Kelly Broadcasting Systems in 2000.
Dish completed its $320 million purchase of Blockbuster in late April, after beating out billionaire investor Carl Icahn and Cobalt Video, for the acquisition. Last September, Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, listing the major studios as its unsecured creditors.
Kelly, who was instrumental in Dish's acquisition of Blockbuster, said that he's "excited to work with Blockbuster's dedicated employees and franchisees around the world to reinvigorate the iconic Blockbuster brand."
Dish chairman and CEO Charlie Ergen said that Kelly's leadership "will be key to returning Blockbuster to profitability and improving the experience we offer to consumers across the U.S. and globally."
