More Carriage Wars: DirecTV to Pull G4 Monday

Move comes after failed carriage negotiations with cable network’s owner, Comcast

DirecTV is dropping pop culture and gaming channel G4, TheWrap has confirmed.

It will be pulled from DirecTV's lineup on Monday.

Kevin Pereira, host of G4's "Attack of the Show," announced on-air Saturday that the satellite provider had failed to come to terms on a new carriage deal with the channel's owner Comcast.

"We have been trying to engage DirecTV in fair and reasonable discussions to continue to carry G4. G4 offered DirecTV the same basic deal we have had for the past three years. However they still plan to drop the network and deny G4 fans the only network that focuses on the popular gaming lifestyle," Amelia Stewart, Comcast's vice president of media relations and corporate communications, told TheWrap.

Disputes over programming fees have become increasingly widespread over the past years, with providers such as AT&T U-verse dropping channels like the Hallmark Channel rather than shoulder the rising costs of retransmission.

Others — such as Fox and Cablevision — have seen their carriage disputes deteriorate into pulled signals and name calling before ultimately hammering out new contracts.

G4's deal with DirecTV was reported to be around five cents per subscriber per month.

The contract expired at the end of September, with both sides agreeing to extend the deadline by a month in the hopes of reaching an agreement.

Without going into specifics about the breakdown in negotiations, Comcast stood by its efforts to hike fees for G4. It claims that the network has grown more than 175 percent over the same period five years ago, a sign of its increased value.
