‘Tiger King 2’ Release Date Revealed by Netflix (Video)

The streamer promises “more madness”

Netflix has firmly announced the “Tiger King 2” release date as Nov. 17, promising subscribers more “madness and mayhem” later this year, the streaming service revealed Saturday during its online fan event Tudum.

The eight-episode docuseries “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness” was an early pandemic hit when it launched on Netflix in March 2020, chronicling the stranger-than-fiction story of Joe Exotic, a zookeeper and convicted felon operating a private zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Audiences were enraptured and “Tiger King” instantly hit the zeitgeist, leading Netflix to quietly begin work on a follow-up.

“Tiger King 2” was shot in 2020 and into 2021, but story details are still under wraps. However, with Netflix’s date announcement video — which you can view via the clip above — we do have a few hints about what more will be included in this next chapter of Joe Exotic’s wild tail — er, tale.

In 2019, Exotic was convicted of trying to hire a hitman to murder Carole Baskin, a big cat conservationist who accused Exotic of abusing his animals. He was also convicted on 17 federal charges of animal abuse and subsequently sentenced to 22 years in a federal prison. In July 2021, a federal appeals court ruled his original sentencing excessive, and he’s currently awaiting a new sentence.

Following the show’s explosion, Hollywood put into development a number of different adaptations. Nicolas Cage was pegged to star as Exotic in a TV series produced by Imagine Entertainment and CBS Television Studios, but the idea was eventually scrapped. Peacock, meanwhile, began production this summer on its own adaptation starring John Cameron Mitchell as Joe Exotic and Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin.

In the teaser above, Netflix describes “Tiger King 2” with these words: “March 19, 2020. The world had no idea what was about to hit. A story so wild, a world so captivating, a phenomenon so global, we’ve only scratched the surface.”

The teaser ends with footage of Joe Exotic in prison, talking to the filmmakers on a phone through protective glass.

“Tiger King 2” will hit Netflix on Nov. 17.
