John Brenkus, the co-creator and host of the Emmy-winning “Sport Science,” died at the age of 54 on Saturday. His death came after a battle with depression.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away,” Brenkus’ X account posted on Sunday. “His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”
“Sport Science” originally ran from 2007 to 2009 and explored the science behind athletic endeavors. The first two seasons premiered on FSN before the show moved to ESPN for its third season. Throughout its run, the series won multiple Sports Emmy Awards, including Outstanding New Approaches in Sports Programming. In addition to “Sport Science,” Brenkus was a founder of BASE Productions, which he co-founded with Mickey Stern, as well as Brinx TV.
Several notable names in the sports world posted about Brenkus’ death. “This is incredibly sad. John was so good at what he did. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, John,” Adam Schefter, ESPN Senior NFL Insider, wrote on X.
“RIP,” sportscaster Marcellus Wiley posted with prayer hands. Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III also posted about Brenkus’ death.
Brenkus previously talked about his experience with depression with Wiley. “I fell into a very deep depression,” he said about what it was like after he sold his company and sold “Sport Science” to ESPN.
At the time, he was living in Park City, noting that the cold and isolation of the place added to his negative feelings. “I was flat out suicidal,” Brenkus said. He only stopped himself from taking his own life because of his dog, Zepplin. “In my suicidal funk, I was like: ‘What am I doing?’ I literally picked up my phone, called my mom and said: ‘There’s something wrong with me. I am mentally lost.’”
