‘First Kiss’ Viral Video Sensation Viewed More Than 45 Million Times (Video)

The ubiquity of the YouTube video featuring 20 strangers kissing for the first time surprised the creator and taught her about Reddit

That black and white kissing video that everyone and their mom shared on Facebook has been watched more than 45 million times.

The Wren clothing line commissioned filmmaker Tatia Pilieva to create a video that would showcase their Fall collection but it succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, the New York Times reports.

Pilieva posted the video of the strangers sucking face at 2 p.m. Monday and emailed it to just a couple people. “Hey my dears, I wanted to share our little film with you. Here are the links, feel free to share as you wish,” she wrote in the email.

Share they did and the video caught on like wild fire, hitting the front page of Reddit.

“A friend called me up and said ‘You’re on the front page of Reddit,’” Pilieva explained. “And I didn’t understand what that meant.”

The video was made on a shoestring budget of $1,300, and the kissing strangers were all friends of of filmmaker and clothing designer. Contrary to previous reports characterizing them as actors, the kissers were just paid in spit. The singer Soko, who performs “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow,” also participated in the video and has seen online sales of her song skyrocket.
