Jake Gyllenhaal Fights to Get Back in the Ring in New ‘Southpaw’ Trailer (Video)

Boxing drama slugs its way into theaters July 24

Jake Gyllenhaal delivers more hard punches to the head and the heart in the latest trailer for “Southpaw.”

In the film, Gyllenhaal plays champion prize fighter Billy Hope who inadvertently causes the death of his wife when he lets his anger get the better of him in a streetfight.

Consumed by grief and addiction, Hope loses his daughter to child protective services and is ultimately suspended from professional boxing. He tries to stage a comeback with the help of a veteran trainer (Forest Whitaker).

Antoine Fuqua, the director of “Training Day” and “The Equalizer,” helmed The Weinstein Company project. “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter and Richard Wenk wrote the screenplay.

Eminem contributed to the soundtrack of the film, releasing the full-length version of “Phenomenal,” the song featured in this trailer, on Tuesday.

“Southpaw” hits theaters on July 24
