When it comes to putting celebrities into political positions, the hosts of “The View” remain skeptical. But for Alyssa Farah Griffin, at this point, too many people are running for office just to gain celebrity status; she’d prefer a celebrity who actually wants to govern.
The discussion came on Wednesday’s episode of “The View,” as the hosts discussed the fact that Dwayne Johnson recently confirmed that he is no longer considering a run for president. In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Johnson said, “It’s off the table. Yes. It is off the table. I will say this ‘cause it requires a B-side to this. I love our country and everyone in it. I also love being a daddy. And that’s the most important thing to me is being a daddy, number one, especially during this time, this critical time in my daughters’ lives.”
And while the women of “The View” supported that sentiment, Joy Behar noted that it wouldn’t have made sense for Johnson to run anyway, because he’s never publicly expressed where he stands on many issues. But Alyssa Farah Griffin was more open to the idea of another celebrity running.
“I think nowadays, people run for office for celebrity,” Farah Griffin said, “How many members of congress that’s like, they’re doing it to get booked on TV and to build a brand? So I’d actually prefer a celebrity who cares about public service, than a politician who wants to be a celebrity.”
Whoopi Goldberg joked that citing family as the main reason he wouldn’t be running maybe wasn’t the best idea, considering how many presidents have been fathers while in office. “I don’t think I would mention, also, that I don’t know anything about politics, if I’m trying to convince people to think about me as somebody running,” she added.
Host Sara Haines agreed that Johnson’s lack of political experience was less of a concern in today’s political landscape, admitting that she’d be more confident in Dwayne Johnson and his potential appointees than she was with Trump.
“I have more faith in Dwayne Johnson as someone who is a family man,” Haines said. If you follow him, everything from his charity work with people with disabilities, his family — his mom, he worships his mom — he’s showing me some qualities, that I would love to hear a little more.”
She later added, “Richard Nixon had experience. So did Andrew Johnson and some of the other people that have been pretty bad presidents.”
