CBS summer drama posted ratings declines in second and third seasons

Under the Dome

“Under the Dome” will end after its upcoming season finale, CBS announced on Monday.

Based on Stephen King‘s bestselling novel, the show tells the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. Combating Dome and man-made threats daily, the residents of Chester’s Mill must battle to survive their post-apocalyptic surroundings.

In the series finale, when the Dome comes down, many questions about its origin and power will be answered, as two groups of residents engage in one final conflict that some won’t survive.

The show debuted Monday, June 24, 2013 and drew one of the biggest summer premiere’s in CBS history with 13.53 million viewers. The first season also averaged 11.19 million viewers per episode. However, those numbers dropped off considerably going into seasons two and three, with seas0n three only averaging attracting only 4.8 million viewers per episode.

“Two years ago, UNDER THE DOME broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world,” CBS Entertainment chair Nina Tassler said. “‘Dome’s’ event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of ‘Extant’ and ‘Zoo.’ We’re excited to present the final chapter in Chester’s Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up.”

All three seasons of the show will continue to be available for unlimited streaming to fans and members of Amazon’s Prime Video.

Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Dean Norris, Eddie Cahill, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, Mackenzie Lintz and Kylie Bunbury star. The show is produced by CBS Television Studios and Amblin Television. Steven Spielberg, Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider, Tim Schlattmann and Peter Leto are executive producers.

“Under the Dome’s” final episode will air on Sept. 10 at 10pm/9c.
