Anchor Bay Entertainment Nabs Rights to ‘Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead’ (Exclusive)

"Mimesis" centers on a role playing game that draws on classic horror films

Anchor Bay Entertainment  has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to "Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead" from Dead Weight Productions, the film's executive producer told TheWrap.

In addition, Meyers Entertainment has signed a deal to represent the horror thriller in the rest of the world.

The film has been screening in roughly 25 film festivals and conventions over the past year and getting good buzz from the thrills and chills crowd, Seth Willenson, the executive producer said. It centers on a group of horror fans who engage in a role playing game that emulates classic movies from the genre. In true horror fashion, the game in question takes some gory turns that seem straight out of a George A. Romero splatter-fest.

In a largely favorable review, horror blog Rue Morgue wrote "…the director keeps the chamber drama esthetic of its source material, using the location to full potential and backing it up with well-written dialogue for a pretty exciting film that cleverly plays with expectations."

"Mimesis" stars Sid Haig (Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects") and Courtney Gains ("Children of the Corn").

The film was directed by Doug Schulze ("Dark Fields") and produced by Schulze and Kurt Mayry ("Dark Heaven").  Willenson represented the film in addition to serving as its executive producer. He negotiated the deal with Kevin Kasha at Anchor Bay.

“I have been involved in midnight shows since 'Reefer Madness' and 'Rocky Horror' and seen the momentum when a film becomes a community experience," Willenson said. "['Mimesis'] breaks all the rules."

Anchor Bay and the producers are planning a series of special exhibitions for the picture.
