The 2009 Tony Award nominations have been announced — with "Billy Elliot" dancing his way to the top. The British import based on the 2000 hit film picked up 15 nods, tieing with 2001’s "The Producers" for the most ever for a show.
Another musical, the lower-key "Next to Normal," pulled in 11 nominations.
As for dramas, the British imports of revivals "Mary Stuart" and "The Norman Conquests" each got seven nominations.
Other top performers: "Shrek the Musical" and the "Hair" revival (eight), "God of Carnage" (six) and hair-metal musical "Rock of Ages" (five) and "West Side Story" and "Pal Joey" (four).
The big-budget musical of the season, Dolly Parton’s "9 to 5," which has a pre-Broadway run at L.A.’s Ahmanson theater got four minor nominations, including one for score.
