Tom Cruise to Continue Sci-Fi Binge With WB’s ‘Yukikaze’

Tom Cruise is continuing his science fiction binge, as the star of "Oblivion" and Doug Liman's upcoming "All You Need Is Kill" is attached to topline "Yukikaze" for Warner Brothers, an individual familiar with the project has confirmed to TheWrap.

"Yukikaze" will be based on a series of Japanese sci-fi novels by Chohei Kamayashi.

Set three decades after an alien invasion, story follows a group of humans who team up to combat the threat on its home planet.

Warner Bros. acquired feature rights to Kamayashi's series and will both finance and distribute the film, which will be produced by Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally, who also produced "All You Need Is Kill" for WB.

Last October, this reporter broke the news that Cruise had quietly attached himself to star in another sci-fi project, "Our Name Is Adam," which remains in development at Paramount and Mary Parent's Disruption Entertainment. It's unclear where "Yukikaze" fits in Cruise's jam-packed development slate, as he's also in line to star in WB's "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and MGM's remake of "The Magnificent Seven," as well as additional installments in Paramount's "Mission: Impossible" and "Jack Reacher" franchises.

Cruise's latest film, "Oblivion," arrives in domestic theaters on Friday after grossing $61 million overseas this past weekend. He's repped by CAA.

Cruise's casting was first reported by Deadline.
