Pop star Aaron Carter posted an emotional tweet Saturday night about something he says “has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life” – he came out as bisexual.

“This doesn’t bring me shame, just a weight and burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off me,” he wrote.

The 29-year-old singer said that when he was 13 years-old — around the time he became known as a teen idol and the younger brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter — he realized that he “started to find boys and girls attractive” and, at age 17, he had “an experience with a male that I had an attraction to who I also worked with and grew up with.”

“To me music has always been my temple,” Carter continued. “Music will ALWAYS be what transcends us and myself. The studio has always been my safe haven. But the ultimate goal for me is to be satisfied. I never want to be a figure of disappointment.”

Carter was arrested last month in Georgia on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession, along with his girlfriend, Madison Parker, who was also charged with pot possession. According to TMZ, Parker and Carter split this past week, though their break-up was reported to be amicable.
