Adele Reveals the Broadway Role She Thinks She Could ‘Nail’ to Win the EGOT (Video)

“If I move to New York, I get bored, I’ll be on that stage in a hot second,” the singer said during a fan event

If Adele were to pursue the Tony Award she needs to complete her EGOT, there’s only one role she could see herself taking on, the singer said during a recent promotional event for her “I Drink Wine” music video.

“I saw [‘Gypsy’] in London and I did love the role of the mum in it,” she said, referring to the character Rose. “She has a song when she was like, ‘I wanted to do all of this’ and she’s jealous of her own daughter and she’s really caught up about it. At one bit, she was just a bitch in it which I could nail.”

Though admittedly “not a massive Broadway fan,” she said she was taken by a production of the Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim musical she saw in London – particularly, the number “Rose’s Turn.”

Adele joked that her work ethic might throw a wrench in her Broadway plans – just ask her friend and musical superstar Bette Midler.

“I actually know Bette Midler, which is a big flex, right? Because she’s one of my idols,” Adele said. “She was like, ‘You would never be able to keep up with the schedule on Broadway.’ Because I’m so lazy. I’m so notoriously lazy … I would not be able to do matinees and all that. I don’t have the stamina for that.”

More likely is that the singer would bring her “Weekends With Adele” residency, which begins next month following a postponement from earlier this year, to Broadway.

“I don’t think I’ve seen enough [Broadway] as a grown-up to know if I would want to do it,” she continued. “I was wondering, do I just move the show from Vegas to Broadway and win the Tony? I actually prefer the sound of an EGO than an EGOT. EGO is fun.”

However slim the possibility of that happening may be, “Never say never,” she teased. “If I move to New York, I get bored, I’ll be on that stage in a hot second.”

Adele is poised to join a small group of people who have won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. She earned an Academy Award for the James Bond theme song “Skyfall,” 15 Grammys spanning her albums “19,” “21” and “25,” and an Emmy for her “Adele One Night Only” concert special. She is expected to be a major contender at the next Grammy Awards for her latest album, “30.”
