Afeni Shakur Davis, Rapper Tupac’s Mother, Dies at 69

She was the subject of the legendary California emcee’s hit “Dear Mama”

Rapper Tupac Shakur‘s “Dear Mama” died late last night in Marin County, Calif. Afeni Shakur Davis was 69.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office tweeted the news early Tuesday. Deputies had responded to reports of possible cardiac arrest at 9:34 p.m. PT Monday.

Shakur Davis was transported from her home in Sausalito to the hospital, where she died at 10:28 p.m.

The Coroner’s Office will lead the investigation to determine the exact cause of death, officials said.

Shakur Davis was the subject of the larger-than-life rapper’s hit song “Dear Mama,” which readers can watch above via the official music video.

Her son was shot on Sep. 7, 1996 in an infamous Las Vegas drive-by. Tupac died six days later in the hospital. His murder remains an unsolved mystery to this day.

The Death Row Records recording artist has sold upwards of 75 million records, with the majority of that coming posthumously.
