Alcon Entertainment has acquired release rights to Oren Peli's horror thriller "Chernobyl Diaries," and will distribute the movie on Memorial Day weekend through its output deal with Warner Bros., the company said Tuesday.
Peli wrote and is producing the movie, about a group of friends who vacation in Europe and find themselves stranded in the abandoned city of Prypiat, where the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor once lived. But they find they are not alone.
Brad Parker, who was the visual effects supervisor on the 2010 "Let Me In," makes his directorial debut with the movie.

Brian Witten ("Dark City," "Final Destination," "Friday the 13th") produced with Peli.
FilmNation Entertainment financed the film — the first that FilmNation has fully financed.
"Alcon is thrilled to have acquired this unique, thoughtful and very frightening film," Alcon's co-founders and co-CEOs, Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, said in a statement. "The content is all the more terrifying given that it's based on reality."
Peli wrote and directed Paramount's hit "Paranormal Activity," a franchise that has grossed more than $576 million. He also created "The River," a paranormal jungle adventure for ABC.
He also produced "Insidious."
