Antonio Banderas’ Chilean Miner Drama ‘The 33’ Unveils Emotional First Trailer (Video)

Patricia Riggen directed the film, which co-stars Lou Diamond Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro and Juliette Binoche

20th Century Fox Chile has released the first international trailer for the Chilean miner drama “The 33,” which stars Antonio Banderas, Lou Diamond Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro, Gabriel Byrne and Juliette Binoche.

Patricia Riggen directed the film, which was produced by Mike Medavoy, Robert Katz and Edward McGurn.

The Chilean miners made headlines around the globe while they were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010. As such, the trailer packs an emotional wallop, and the film could wind up as an unlikely awards contender.

“The 33” was shot in Colombia and Chile’s Atacama desert. There’s no word on a U.S. release date, but it’s possible the film could debut at one of the fall film festivals if it doesn’t premiere at Cannes.
