Apple Closes Stores for Steve Jobs Memorial

Company employees will get time to watch a service for the late Apple co-founder

Apple closed its U.S. retail stores for an hour and a half beginning at 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday so that its employees can watch the service for its late co-founder, Steve Jobs.

CEO Tim Cook sent an email to his employees informing them of the closures and the details of the service, which will take place at 10 a.m. at the Cupertino campus’ outdoor amphitheater.

Employees should "take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place," Cook wrote.

Apple also has launched a tribute page (pictured left) for its former CEO, displaying thoughts and comments from fans, colleagues and friends.

“Over a million people from all over the world have shared their memories, thoughts and feelings about Steve,” it notes. “One thing they all have in common — from personal friends to colleagues to owners of Apple products — is how they’ve been touched by his passion and creativity. You can view some of these messages below.”

Jobs’ family and friends celebrated his life this past Sunday with a memorial service at Stanford University, where the likes of Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Bill Clinton turned out to pay their respects.

Jobs died Oct. 5 at the age of 56 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
