April the Giraffe’s Calf Gets First Visit With Vet: ‘Baby Checks Out Just Perfect’ (Video)

Park holds contest to name not-so-little bundle of joy

April the Giraffe’s long-awaited calf is doing just dandy.

A veterinarian who gave April and her newborn their first post-birth check up was happy to announce Sunday that all vitals are good.

“Baby checks out just perfect,” Park officials told more than 1.3 million followers on Facebook. “Nursing strongly this morning without any concerns.”

April the Giraffe became an internet sensation after her pregnancy was live-streamed from Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y.  The New York hamlet’s YouTube channel drew nearly five million viewers a day at its peak, as viewers kept checking back to see whether the giraffe had finally given birth.

Park officials say April has “recovered perfectly and is eating everything in sight.”  The proud papa, a five-year-old giraffe named Oliver, watched from an adjacent pen as April gave birth. This is his first offspring and April’s fourth.

The park is holding a contest to name the baby giraffe, with votes costing a dollar a pop.

Zoo owner Jordan Patch called the birth “unnerving” to watch.

“Giraffes give birth standing up, which means when the calf is ready to be born, it exits its mother hooves first from six feet off the floor, making for a very exciting event,” Patch said in a news release.

About 1.25 million people watched April give birth to the calf. The calf will eventually be sent to another zoo to prevent “incestuous mating.”
