Armie Hammer May Saddle Up With Johnny Depp in ‘Lone Ranger’

Hammer would play the masked lawman in Gore Verbinski’s movie

Armie Hammer is positioned to nab a second highly coveted role: The Lone Ranger.

Hammer, who played the Winklevoss twins in "The Social Network" and has been cast as the prince in Relativity Media's upcoming "Snow White" movie, is in talks to play the masked lawman in Disney's "Lone Ranger," TheWrap has confirmed.

Ryan Gosling had been in talks for the role opposite Johnny Depp as Tonto but is no longer up for the part. 

Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, is directing the adaptation of the Lone Ranger for producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Lone Ranger started as a radio serial and was later turned into a TV series. The Lone Ranger is a masked lawman who, with his Native American friend Tonto, fights injustice. Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels starred in the "Lone Ranger" television series from 1949 to 1957.

"Revolutionary Road's" Justin Haythe is writing the screenplay.

"The Lone Ranger" is scheduled to be released in 2014.

Hammer also stars with Leonardo DiCaprio in Warner Bros. J.Edgar Hoover biopic "J. Edgar."
